Lenovo ThinkPad X1 carbon is one of the best laptops you can buy. With 2.5 pounds, it is light, thin and very portable. It offers a lot of power for most tasks, battery life throughout the day and, unlike its competition, ports for all its accessories.
We were reviewed the Linux version of the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon last year, and everything in this review also applies to the updated version of the machine. The main carbon change 2021 x1 is the movement to the 11th generation Intel processors. Ah, and the new screen a little higher, which now has an appearance ratio of 16:10, as well as Dell XPS 13.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1
The new Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon is not a design revolution. However, that is good, because the design has always been very well done and does not need a change of image. It is lighter than most competition, especially executive class laptops such as Dell’s latitude, and soft carbon fiber surface is a distinctive stamp ThinkPad at this time. I suppose it depends on your personal aesthetics, but I have always preferred the appearance of thinkpad carbon fiber with laptops of aluminum and titanium.
All family and deservedly famous elements are here: the keyboard is excellent; The red pointer protuberance is between the G, H and B keys; And there are three buttons at the top of the trackpad.
There are also many ports. Unlike other ultra-advertising, I am looking at you, XPS 13 and Macbook Air, there are two USB-C Tuncerbolt 4 ports, two USB-A ports, an HDMI 2.0 port, a headphones connector and a Kensington block slot. The only thing missing is an SD or microSD card slot. Even so, a dongle is better than the half dozen you need with other laptops.
The most notable change in GEN 9 x1 carbon is the new 16:10 screen size. As I said when Dell made the same change in the XPS, I would not think that this would be a big problem, but it really shows in daily work.
That additional average screen of the screen means that there is more vertical space for documents, web pages and spreadsheets, which means less displacement and generally makes life more pleasant. When I sent the X1 carbon back to Lenovo, my X250 16: 9 screen suddenly felt narrower. The body size and weight difference compared to model 16: 9 is insignificant, and any additional screen that can get from a laptop is a user victory.
The model I tried had the FHD+ (1920 x 1200 pixels) panel, but there is a 4K option available if you wish. However, the 1080P version has a matt panel, which is an advantage if it is working in very illuminated situations. It only reaches 365 nits of brightness, which is not the leader of the industry in any way, but it was bright enough to sit outside on a summer day and work in the sun. Unfortunately, there is no OLED screen, which is disappointing.
Perhaps the greatest disappointment, apart from the missing SD card slot, is the 720p webcam. No Lenovo that I have used has had an exceptional webcam, but this is bad enough for my colleagues to comment on how bad it was when I used it for a zoom meeting. Given the amount of zoom meetings that the average corporate worker is doing these days, this seems great supervision by Lenovo. To be fair, no computer manufacturer seems to be willing to put a decent camera on a laptop, so if you really need a high quality video, it is better with a third -party webcam.
The change to the 11th generation Intel processors is also an update welcome. The model I tried presented the I7 chip with 16 RAM gigabytes and 512 Gigabyte SSD (keep in mind that the RAM is welded, so there are no updates in the future). The PCMark reference points that I executed placed the X1 carbon right next to the other laptops of the Intel Core processor of 11th generation. It is fast, but there is no discreet GPU, so do not plan to use this for graphic games or huge video files.
However, for the needs of most people, I7 is powerful enough. If you are working mainly with office documents, watching HD movies and sailing on the web, save some money and go with the Intel I5 model.
I could not find the exact configuration I tried for sale at the Lenovo site, but I have seen a version with a chip i7, 16 gigabytes of RAM and 1-The SSD for sale for around $ 2,000. That is a reasonable price for these high -end specifications, but the real list price is $ 3,409, which is an incredibly high price for this laptop.
This is the main problem with the X1 series, and with the Dell latitudes series, many HP and other “commercial” laptops. They are good laptops, but the main buyers are large corporations, which do not pay these prices. Because consumer demand is not so high, the price is more than it should be. If you can expect a sale and collect an X1 carbon with an i7 for around $ 2,000, or an i5 model for around $ 1,300, it is worth it.
Design of Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon (Gen 9)
The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 has the classical aesthetics of Thinkpad Raven Black, rectangular Thinkpad that we expect from Lenovo over the years. The light chassis is made of a combination of magnesium and carbon fiber, with a good feeling of soft touch in the outburst. There is an optional carbon fiber tissue cover that gives the laptop an additional class touch and a softer texture, but it only comes in configurations that have a 3840 x 2400 screen.
There are some subtle, but important changes, design of the GEN 8 version of the Thinkpad X1 carbon. The chassis is a bit longer and narrower (12.38 x 8.72 inches compared to 12.7 x 8.5 inches) to accommodate an appearance screen of 16:10 compared to the coals of panels 16: 9 have been used above. This allows more vertical screen real estate that you can use to read web pages or edit documents.
Display on Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon (Gen 9)
The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 is available with four different screen options, all of which are an appearance ratio of 16:10, which remains significantly more vertical real estate than panels 16: 9 that most of the majority of the laptops still have. Our review unit arrived with the 1920 X 1200 touch screen, but there is also a 1920 x 1200 base level non -tactile screen, a 1920 x 1200 screen with privacyguard, a feature that limits the visualization angles to prevent someone from Look over the shoulder, or a 3840 x 2400 panel that appears with 500 shine nits.
When I saw a trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Way Home, fine details such as Peter Parker’s eyebrows and the beams on a bridge were acute and easy to distinguish. However, colors like red in Spider-Man’s suit and orange in Dr. Strang’s spell were not particularly vibrant. It is also worth noting that, due to the appearance ratio of the 16:10 screen, the black bars on the top and lower video were larger than when I saw the same trailer on a 16: 9 laptop screen. However, the images were bright and the visualization angles on the matte screen were strong with colors that barely faded even 90 degrees to the left or right.
In our colorimeter, the Thinkpad X1 Carbon screen recorded a modest 69 percent of the DCI-P3 color range, which is on par with the similar panels of X1 Yoga and X1 Nano. Dell XPS 13 was much less colorful, while Zenbook 13 exploded the field reproducing 96.5 percent of the range with its OLED screen.
At 364 nights in our light meter, the X1 Carbon is quite bright and within a few points of the Asus Zenbook 13 and Thinkpad X1 Yoga. However, both the X1 Nano and the XPS 13 had more than 400 nits. If you really want a brighter screen, the 1920 X 1200 privacy and the panels of 3840 x 2400 are listed as provided 500 nits.
